William D. McKoy of Indiana was appointed minister to Liberia on this date in 1892. Eugene Kinckle Jones, the first Executive Secretary of the National Urban League, died in New York on this date in 1954. In 1906, Jones was one of the seven co-founders of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Hank Aaron, baseball legend, received the 60th NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1976 for his achievements in baseball, for establishing the home-run record (715), and for his outstanding sportsmanship-making him a good role model for young people. Aaron would go on to hit 755 homeruns. |
